Abstract(s)
The production of components for the automotive sector is an important pillar of the national metalworking industry. Formerly based in relatively low labour costs, the components industry is gradually evolving to more advanced production systems. Regarding both the increase of international competition and costs associated with labour, as well as due to factors related to quality assurance, these companies increasingly invest in dedicated or flexible systems, but that depend less on the labour factor and corresponding associated variability, both in terms of cost and quality. This work was based on a request of a multinational company dedicated to the assembly of components for the automotive industry – DELFINGEN PT-Porto, S. A. This company, from a diverse range of sets that manufactures for the automotive industry, has a sector particularly dedicated to the assembly of components for the articulation of the vehicle widescreen washers. The assembly service is strictly performed in a manual manner, which implies the use of a large amount of unskilled manpower, uncertainty in terms of quality assurance and an uncompetitive cycle time. The challenge of this work was to design a fully-automated equipment capable of carrying out these assembly tasks. In addition to this challenge, this family of products comprises more than twenty different models and, according to the company's requirement, which welcome this project, should be contemplated, through a high flexibility of the systems, enabling an agile work preparation.
