Development of a Lean Methodology Implementation Framework to Assist the Certification of an Organization as B Corporation

| dc.description.abstract | The world is living through a period in which focusing solely on economic dimensions is no longer viable for any company, and they are forced to operate in an ethical and sustainable manner. The purpose of the B Corp certificate is to use business as a force to create benefits for all stakeholders. The lean philosophy has proven to be a very effective management philosophy for eliminating waste, optimising processes and managing resources efficiently. This dissertation aims to study the relationship between lean philosophy and B Corp certification, and to develop a framework that aligns the capabilities and characteristics of lean philosophy through its tools, to help a company certify as a B Corporation. It also analyses the implementation of the lean philosophy by B Corp companies, which are the priority actions in the dimensions of sustainability carried out by them, and whether the implementation of lean tools results in positive impacts in the environmental, social and economic dimensions, and whether these impacts can consequently benefit the scores in the different categories of the certificate. In order to answer these questions, a systematic literature review is conducted, together with a bibliometric analysis, focusing on analysing lean philosophy, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the B Corp certificate. The content was collected using the Web of Science platform, between 1900 and 2025. After analysing the publications, a bibliometric analysis was carried out using the Vosviewer software, identifying the most relevant publications, the authors and creating a bibliometric co-occurrence network to understand the links between the themes. The literature review analyses around 310 articles and shows evidence of the relationship between Lean, CSR and B Corp. Subsequently, in order to develop the framework and understand the effects of lean philosophy on B Corp companies, a conceptual model is proposed. To test the model's hypotheses, a survey was created and sent to 4050 B Corp companies between 14/06/2024 and 21/10/2024. 119 responses were obtained, 144 of which were valid, which allowed for a maximum margin of error of 9.05% for a 95% confidence level. The data is processed and analysed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach in the SMARTPLS software. The results of the tests indicate that the implementation of lean philosophy in B Corp companies is very low. The implementation of lean philosophy is positively related to B Corp environmental performance, negatively related to social performance and negatively related to economic performance. As for the implementation of the lean philosophy and the impact on the categories assessed by the certificate, none of the hypotheses obtained statistical support that represents any significant effect between the implementation of the lean philosophy and the score in the different categories of the certificate. | eng |
| dc.description.abstract | O mundo vive um período em que atualmente o foco apenas nas dimensões económicas já não é viável para qualquer empresa, com as mesmas a verem-se obrigadas a realizar funcionar de forma ética e sustentável. O certificado B Corp tem o propósito de utilizar negócios como uma força para criar benefícios para todas as partes interessadas. A filosofia lean já demonstrou ser uma filosofia de gestão muito eficaz para eliminação de desperdícios, otimizar processos e gestão eficiente de recursos. A presente dissertação pretende estudar as relações entre a filosofia lean e o certificado B Corp, e desenvolver uma framework que alinhe as capacidades e características da filosofia lean através das ferramentas, para auxiliar uma empresa a certificar como B Corporation. Também é analisada a implementação da filosofia lean pelas empresas B Corp, quais são as ações prioritárias nas dimensões da sustentabilidade executadas pelas mesmas, e se a implementação de ferramentas lean resultam em impactos positivos nas dimensões ambientais, sociais e económicas, e se por consequência esses impactos podem beneficiar as pontuações nas diferentes categorias do certificado . Para responder a estas questões é conduzido uma revisão sistemática da literatura, em conjunto com uma análise bibliométrica, com foco na análise da filosofia lean, responsabilidade social corporativa (RSC) e o certificado B Corp. A recolha de conteúdo é feita através da plataforma Web of Science, no período compreendido entre 1900 e 2025. Após análise das publicações, é feita a análise bibliométrica, através do software Vosviewer, e identifica-se as publicações mais relevantes, os autores, e é criada uma rede de coocorrência bibliométrica para compreender a ligação entre os temas. A revisão de literatura analisa cerca de 310 artigos e mostra evidências da relação entre o Lean, a RSC e o B Corp. Posteriormente, para desenvolver a framework e compreender os efeitos da filosofia lean nas empresas B Corp, é proposto um modelo conceptual. Para testar as hipóteses do modelo, é criado e enviado um inquérito para 4050 empresas B Corp, entre o período de 14/06/2024 a 21/10/2024, e foi possível obter 119 respostas, das quais 144 são válidas, o que permitiu uma margem de erro máxima de 9.05% para um nível de confiança de 95%. Os dados são tratados e analisados para a utilização da abordagem de Modelação de Equações Estruturais com Mínimos Quadrados parciais (PLS-SEM), no software SMARTPLS. Os resultados dos testes indicam que a implementação da filosofia lean em empresas B Corp é muito reduzida. A implementação da filosofia lean apresenta uma relação positiva no desempenho ambiental das B Corp, uma relação negativa no desempenho social, e uma relação negativa no desempenho económico. Quanto à implementação da filosofia lean e o impacto nas categorias avaliadas pelo certificado, nenhuma das hipóteses obteve suporte estatístico que represente algum efeito significativo entre a implementação da filosofia lean e a pontuação nas diferentes categorias do certificado. | por |
