Abstract(s)
This paper proposes the development of a photographic project that reflects on cafés as social spaces. The study of these places will be framed within the notion of the “third place” presented by Oldenburg (2013), who argues for the need for a place other than home (first place) and work (second place), whose function is purely social. Thus, cafés are understood as important spaces for the social health of communities, where people spend time in informal socializing, but whose role as a third place has been threatened by the digital world. The project aims to document these businesses and the people who frequent them, to understand and reflect on the role of these cafés in local communities today. To this end, there is an interest in studying the spaces and customers, as well as the relationships between individuals and the places and between each other. The theoretical framework focuses on popular representation in documentary photography, the relationship between photographer and subject, the documentary of everyday life, and time in photography. The photographic exploration seeks to promote a critical and attentive view of these spaces, bearing in mind the current sociocultural and political climate.
