Abstract(s)
This study was developed within the course of Thesis / Project / Internship of the Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering – Industrial Management branch from the Polytechnic of Porto, School of Engineering, with application in industrial environment in a metalwork company of the automotive industry. The project was developed in the final product inspection and packaging area of the company IETA S.A., tier 1 supplier of metal structures, with the goal of minimize claims of defected parts with defects caused by the manufacturing process. The approach of the study began with the record and analysis of data and consequent improvement formulation and implementation to the manufacturing process using Lean Manufacturing technics. The existence of a knowing problem related with the manufacturing process allowed the knowledge of working habits and the presentation of improvement proposals to the plant layout and to the work method. The analysis of the existing problems enabled the identification of improvement opportunities in other areas of the process, revealing the power of the tools used to analyse data. This investigation study reveals very enriching and motivator having proportionated the application of scientific Lean principles in an industrial environment getting tested the added value of its implementation. The application of the studied Lean tools and methodologies allowed a meticulous analysis of data conducting to advantageous improvement proposals compatible with the company needs. Although they have not all been implemented, the presented proposals resulted in a positive impact in the production process with estimated elimination of 38% of claimed defects.
