Abstract(s)
Confinement is omnipresent in nineteenth-century literature and in Camilo Castelo Branco’s work, in which imprisonment is merely one of its many forms. The importance of this theme in Camilo Castelo Branco's work is hardly surprising, given that in the Romantic period the desire to free oneself from constraints was repeatedly asserted. Confinement is treated in Anátema in its three main forms: physical, psychological and existential. The author depicts a gothic castle that inscribes confinement in a destiny.
