Abstract(s)
The development of industry, especially during the current Fourth Industrial Revolution, known as Industry 4.0, requires special attention to data management and innovation in how content is analyzed, problems are identified, and new solutions are proposed. Computer simulation has emerged as one of the major innovations of this era. It enables the analysis of installed processes and the simulation of new scenarios according to the variables that need to be explored. Combining this tool with the importance of an efficient, quick, and safe evacuation for a company provides a scientific basis for suggesting improvements to be implemented. This dissertation explores in detail the evacuation process of a metallurgical company, Metalocaima SA, through a computer simulation. Using the Pathfinder software, it was possible to analyze a series of different evacuation scenarios for the factory. Different combinations of the company’s exit doors were studied, as well as the impact that natural disasters could have on the evacuation of occupants. The results demonstrated the importance of always keeping all emergency exits clear and operational, and that preventive measures should be implemented in case of fires or floods outside the factory, ensuring that workers are prepared and evacuation time is minimized. This study demonstrated how computer simulation is a tool with enormous potential to support decision-making, as well as to manage safety and the evacuation process in an industrial setting.
