Abstract(s)
The accessibility of the deaf person is increasingly in the society of today. All the knowledge that society makes available to this community will influence their experiences and knowledge. In this sense, it is urgent to know how the deaf person accesses the information that involves the concept of sexuality. A present qualitative research arises in order to know the opinion of the deaf person about sexuality. For this purpose, focus groups were used with a total of 18 deaf participants. The study allowed us to investigate the perceptions that the deaf person has regarding knowledge about sexuality, how it was obtained and what the difficulties faced in seeking relevant information. The results, although they may be influenced by the narrow sample number of the study, indicated that the deaf population has a notion of terms that encompass the concept of sexuality, for the most part. Mentioning as main sources of information the school, the doctor and the family. These means of information are influenced by barriers that hinder the accessibility of the deaf person, such as the lack of sign referents, the content made available by the school when addressing mostly biological content, or the doctor and family for not knowing sign language to communicate. However, it’s presence of the interpreter is stressed, which according to the participants is essential to access information about sexuality in places such as the doctor's office or television, but its presence is not effective, which ultimately degrades access to certain content on the subject.
