Club Barcelona, Manchester City Football Club, Liverpool Football Club e Tottenham
gestão sustentável no setor desportivo.
Sustainability has become an increasingly important element in the management of sports organizations, reflecting the need to integrate economic, social, and environmental concerns into organizational strategies. In this context, the present study aimed to analyse how sustainability is integrated into the management and institutional communication practices of eight European football clubs: Futebol Clube do Porto, Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, Futbol Club Barcelona, Manchester City Football Club, Liverpool Football Club, and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, through a comparative analysis of their sustainability reports. The research adopted a qualitative approach based on content analysis of sustainability reports and institutional documents publicly disclosed by the selected clubs. The analysis focused on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability, as well as on the use of key performance indicators, alignment with international frameworks, and the degree of strategic integration of sustainability. The results revealed significant differences among the clubs regarding their level of sustainability maturity. Overall, the social dimension showed the highest levels of development, reflecting the strong engagement of clubs with their communities and stakeholders. In contrast, the economic and environmental dimensions displayed greater heterogeneity, particularly in terms of target setting, the use of performance indicators, and the monitoring of outcomes. The analysis also identified different levels of sustainability maturity, with English clubs generally demonstrating more structured and integrated sustainability approaches, while portuguese clubs exhibited more moderate levels of development. The study concludes that sustainability plays an increasingly important role in the management of sports organizations, although significant differences remain in the way it is planned, implemented, and communicated. The findings highlight the importance of sustainability reports as instruments of transparency, accountability, and support for sustainable management within the sports sector.
