Abstract(s)
Seguir-se-á a apresentação
complementar a primeira.
This essay seeks the understanding of rhythm through its practical application during the editing process of the short film Johnny White (2020), written and directed by Gonçalo Santos. Initially, there will be a perspective which will allow the assimilation of the notion of rhythm and the way it is conceived and placed in a cinematic context. Subsequently, a mainly abstract point of view will be explored in relation to editing and rhythm, supporting the ideas initially presented. From the analysis of methodologies embraced by composers such as Danny Elfman (2014) or Stephen Sondheim (2007), combined with filmmaker Tim Burton’s creative intentions, an alliance is found between objectivity and creativity. Through the acquired understanding of the previous notions, there will be an exploration of rhythm and montage in specific film productions, which will allow a practical perspective. The empirical study rooted on the editing of the short film Johnny White, practical component of this essay, results of a reflection and further practical influences from the developed theoretical investigation.
