Abstract(s)
The islands of Porto emerged in the late 19th century in order to meet the housing needs of the working class, in a period of great industrial expansion. For decades, the interest was the eradication of the islands, currently the goal is their recovery, enjoyment and enhancement (Oro, Vieira, Travasso, & Almeida, 2019). “(Re) Build, (Re)Qualify, (Re)Frame” is a psychosocial intervention project developed with people in a situation of social vulnerability, who live on an island in the center of Porto. The owner of the island, and a group of architects, collaborated in the project as well. This interventions’ purpose was to “change the island’s requalification process, to envolve the participation of the residents, while aiming to improve their well-being and quality of life, as well as empowering and establishing aid relationships between them”. It was based on the Participatory Action Research methodology, and it was developed along two axes: the first was directed at the whole community, aiming to transform the island’s rehabilitation project into a project that met the needs and interests of all, with the goal of improving the quality of the residents lives; and the second, through an individualized psychosocial intervention, provided empowerment to some of the residents who revealed a greater situation of social vulnerability. This project became a privileged channel of support and of personal contribution, where the participation of social actors was valued, with the most evident result being the construction of a requalification project effectively participated by all, which met people’s needs.
