The growing urgency for companies to adopt more sustainable measures has driven the transition to a circular economy. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as an essential new tool to support this transition by offering technological solutions capable of optimizing processes, supporting decisions based on data and reducing waste. This dissertation aims to analyze the role of AI in promoting circular practices in a business context, identifying the main uses, associated technologies and challenges faced. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives of companies operating in Portugal with relevance in sustainability, complemented by the respective thematic analysis. This process made it possible to identify the most recurrent uses within this context, such as data analysis, automatic waste sorting, among others, the most widely used technologies, such as computer vision and intelligent sensors, and the main challenges associated with implementing and using AI in this context. The research contributes to deepening knowledge of this intersection between technology and sustainability, offering a new contribution to this current and increasingly relevant topic.
