Abstract(s)
This study aims to investigate the relationship between digital skills levels and career in the population over 40 years of age. Careers are changing, changing the assumptions that existed previously, by the force of changes in the labor market requiring workers to reweave and a more proactive attitude. These changes occur mainly from the digital transformation that is imposed in the daily life of the population and that the pandemic has accelerated. The population over 40 is challenged to develop skills and skills that enable it to interact using digital media to cope with a market that is transforming and extinguishing jobs. This pressure has a greater impact on older workers since 47% of the workforce available in Portugal has a basic level qualification (People 2018, INE, IP), which implies requalification processes that are necessary to maintain their employability. Data for the study were collected through a questionnaire survey of people over 40 years of age. 216 individuals answered the digital skills questionnaire. The results of the study indicate that this population presents difficulties in the use of digital tools that compromises development and career progression. This difficulty is accentuated in individuals with lower qualifications who are not working because they have lower levels of digital skills. Through cluster analysis, three profiles of individuals associated with digital skills were identified. With these data, it is concluded that this population needs to develop skills that allow them to respond to the unpredictability and effects of technology. In the future it would be interesting to typify this population and analyze the difficulties and motivations for the development of digital skills.
