Abstract(s)
Digital transformation in higher education has become an essential topic, especially in light of the rapid technological changes that affect all sectors of society. In the educational context, it serves as a driver of innovation that promises to modernize administrative processes, personalize the learning experience, and promote access to quality education. However, this transformation is complex and requires deep adaptation from institutions. Understanding how these changes are occurring in higher education in Portugal is fundamental to outlining strategies that enhance the quality and accessibility of education. The motivation for conducting this study arises from the need to understand the current state of digital transformation in higher education, at a time when the integration of technology becomes indispensable for the competitiveness and effectiveness of higher education institutions. The main objective is to analyze how three higher education institutions in Portugal are facing the challenges and implementing digital transformation strategies. Specifically, the study aims to identify the key facilitators and barriers to this process, as well as evaluate the impact of these initiatives on both teaching and academic management. To achieve the proposed objectives, a case study methodology was adopted, based on open-ended interviews with managers of three higher education institutions in Portugal. The choice of this methodology aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the perceptions and practices related to digital transformation in the sector. The interviews allowed for the exploration of managers' experiences, identification of the specific challenges and opportunities faced by each organization, and provided a detailed view of the ongoing digital transformation process. The results of the research reveal that there is a growing commitment to fostering digital transformation and significant awareness of its importance within Portuguese higher education. However, institutions still face significant challenges, such as resistance to organizational change, lack of adequate infrastructure, and the need for continuous training of human resources to effectively integrate new technologies. Despite these challenges, considerable improvements have been observed, such as the adoption of online platforms and collaborative tools, which have the potential to transform management and teaching practices. Furthermore, data security and the protection of personal information emerged as critical areas that require ongoing attention. The study concludes that the success of digital transformation will depend on the implementation of a holistic strategy that balances technological innovation with effective change management necessary in this process.
