Abstract(s)
The present study has the purpose of contributing to the analysis of the level of use of Assessment Centers (AC) in Portugal, more precisely on the northern area. This field is practically non studied in Portugal. Active firms in the north area of Portugal are characterized and, based on the theoretical framework on Assessment Centers and its importance in the assessment of competences, it is analysed the degree of AC utilization, as well as the reasons for what type of positions AC is used in the selection process of employees. This research is based on a survey addressed to human resources (HR) staff or with HR responsibilities, 125 of which responded. Two thirds of the companies which participated on this study do not use assessment centers on their selection process. It seems, even so, to be consensus among them about the advantages of their use, being recognized its high reliability regarding the results. Contributions to literature and practice are presented, as well as limitations of the study and suggestions for further research in the field.
