In this theoretical framing work for the final internship report, as part of the Curricular Unit: “Seminário de Acompanhamento da Prática de Ensino” of the “Mestrado em Ensino de Inglês no 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico”, the aim is to explore the importance of integrating values into the teaching and learning processes of English as a foreign language (L2) in the first cycle of Basic Education. Additionally, it examines how these values can also be effectively, integratively, and holistically assessed. Recognizing the rapid evolution of the educational landscape, emphasis is placed on the relevance of an approach that goes beyond quantitative success metrics, such as grades and rankings, to prioritize the qualitative dimension of learning, where values such as ethics, empathy, and social responsibility play a crucial role (Freire, 1970). Currently, despite efforts aligning with Freire's vision, significant gaps remain in translating pedagogical theories and institutional documents into concrete educational practices. At the theoretical level, there is a clear concern regarding these issues. In educational projects, much is directed toward values and non-formal curriculum competencies. However, in practice (in the domain of effective educational practices), what was proposed in educational projects is not fully observed. This reality seems to reinforce the idea that the promotion of citizenship and values requires more than their inclusion in guiding policy documents, demanding their implementation in everyday educational experiences within a praxis-oriented approach, understood as the articulation between reflection and transformative action (Duarte, 2023; Freire, 1970). In this sense, the work explores how values can be effectively, holistically integrated and assessed in alignment with an education that promotes active and critical citizenship. The analysis focuses on the perspectives of theorists such as Henry Giroux and Miguel Ángel Santos Guerra, who advocate for a critical and transformative pedagogy, emphasizing the inclusion of ethical and social values in the school curriculum. It reflects on how English classes in the 1st CBE incorporate these values into school projects, assessing their observability and positive impact on students' development. This work seeks to demonstrate that education for values, when appropriately integrated, transcends the mere transmission of knowledge, promoting the integral development of students and contributing to significant pedagogical and social transformation. This action-research is guided by research questions and objectives that aim to assess how values can be incorporated and evaluated in the context of English classes, to prepare students to be critical and active citizens in a global society. These elements are outlined in this document and will later be addressed and deepened in the empirical design of the future final internship report.
