Abstract(s)
This thesis was developed under a context of traineeship in a small-sized digital company in Portugal and
aims at creating and measuring the success of a set of processes of project risk management.
In order to perform a risk management diagnoses to the company, a rigorous literature review is developed
under a predefined methodology. The results of this review highlight the factors that contribute to efficient
and effective project risk management: efficient and effective communication between the stakeholders of
the project, sustainable processes, and the problem of project managers’ bias during risk identification
emerge as the most important issues.
After this identification, qualitative research is pursued, by means of the development of case study
research. After a predesigned protocol, semi-structured interviews to the staff are conducted in order to
check the adequacy of the risk management methodology. The conclusions cue to the refinement and creation
of risk management processes and tools for the company. The developed processes and tools are applied to
the company’s projects. A few months later, another round of semi-structured interviews with the staff is
performed in order to understand the effects and level of success of the new processes and tools.
It is possible to conclude that the tailored set of project risk management processes and tools are considered
greatly important and valuable to the company in the eyes of the staff.
This methodology was considered to have successful results and although it derives from case study research,
and therefore the generalization is compromised, it can be extended to other small-sized companies in the
digital sector and, eventually, to bigger companies with a broader business spectrum with the necessary
adaptations in order to increase the knowledge in this field of study.
