The project “A Gift from the Future: memory, association and participation” was developed in an association, the Association for Social Promotion of the Population of the Aleixo Neighbourhood (APSPBA) and involved the participation of children from the Kindergarten and the Leisure Activities Centre, as well as the technical team. The aim of this project was to promote the full development of children through participation and interaction in a context that they feel is their own and capable of generating identity and memory. To achieve this aim, two general objectives were designed: 1) to promote spaces for dialogue and active participation in community life and in the construction of the collective memory of the APSPBA; and 2) to promote the development of children's socio-emotional and relational skills. To achieve the above-mentioned general objectives, two main lines of action were developed: one referred here as “I won't let Aleixo go”, which sought to promote children's participation and the development of active citizenship in community life; and another called “Chat to Transform”, with the aim of using dialogue and relationships as tools for the development of socio-emotional and transversal skills. The development of these actions made it possible to achieve significant advances in children’s participation, in the creation and re-signification of ties with the Association, in the development of skills and in the promotion of a sense of belonging and identity. The project was based on the Participatory Action Research methodology, from a collaborative and participatory perspective, using dialogue, listening, sharing, and emotions to co-construct the project.
