O Lean Thinking é uma filosofia tipicamente associada a indústrias que trabalham com operações e que se baseia na eliminação sistemática de desperdícios como meio para criar valor e aumentar a eficiência dos processos produtivos. Neste contexto, esta investigação tem como principal objetivo adaptar os princípios e ferramentas do Lean Thinking às atividades de Gestão de Projetos de forma investigar se esta filosofia pode ser usada como estratégia para aumentar a eficiência dos projetos através da eliminação e prevenção de desperdícios. Ainda que a relação entre os conceitos de Lean Thinking e Gestão de Projetos já tenha sido abordada na literatura, a investigação que existe não é extensiva e é maioritariamente focada no setor da construção. Assim, a principal motivação para a realização desta investigação é contribuir para o desenvolvimento da área da Gestão de Projetos através: da realização de uma análise bibliométrica que pretende analisar o estado da arte do tema de investigação; da identificação dos principais desperdícios associados à Gestão de Projetos do setor da Tecnologia e Informação; da proposta de um modelo conceptual, adaptado ao setor da Tecnologia e Informação, que adapta os princípios e as ferramentas do Lean Thinking aos diferentes domínios de performance da Gestão de Projetos com o objetivo de eliminar os principais desperdícios.
Em síntese, esta investigação pretende compreender se o Lean Thinking pode ser adaptado à Gestão de Projetos do setor da Tecnologia e Informação como meio de eliminação de desperdícios e consequente aumento da eficiência dos projetos. Para isso, esta investigação encontra-se dividida em três artigos que se focam em diferentes objetivos específicos que contribuem para dar resposta ao objetivo geral mencionado.
Apesar da existência de uma lacuna na literatura que relaciona os dois conceitos o interesse na relação entre os mesmos tem crescido nos últimos anos, tendo sido realizada mais pesquisa nesta área. Relativamente à relação entre o Lean Thinking e a Gestão de Projetos na área da Tecnologia e Informação, a investigação permitiu concluir que este é um tema emergente que tem sido cada vez mais alvo de estudo.
Adicionalmente, esta investigação permitiu concluir que as principais fontes e tipos de desperdícios em projetos do setor da Tecnologia e Informação estão maioritariamente ligados a comportamentos humanos que podem ser evitados ou eliminados e que estes desperdícios têm significativas consequências negativas ao nível da eficiência dos projetos.
As Lean Thinking is a philosophy based on the systematic elimination of waste as a means to create value and increase the efficiency of production processes, this research aims to adapt the principles and tools of Lean Thinking (typically associated with industries working with operations) to Project Management activities. In this way, it is intended to investigate whether Lean Thinking can be adapted to Project Management as a strategy to increase the efficiency of projects through the elimination and prevention of waste. Although the link between the concepts of Lean Thinking and Project Management has already been addressed in the literature, the existing research is not extensive and is mostly focused on the construction sector. Therefore, the primary motivation for conducting this research is to contribute to the development of the Project Management area through: Carrying out a bibliometric analysis that aims to analyze the state of the art of the research topic; Identifying the main sources of waste associated with Project Management in the Information and Technology sector; Proposing a conceptual model, suitable for the Information and Technology sector, that tailors the principles and tools of Lean Thinking to the various performance domains of Project Management with the aim of eliminating the major sources of waste that are typically associated with IT projects. In summary, this research aims to understand whether Lean Thinking can be adapted to IT Project Management as a way to eliminate waste in projects and consequently increase their efficiency. For this purpose, this research is divided in three papers that focus on addressing different specific objectives that contribute to address the aforementioned general objective. This investigation revealed the existence of a gap in the literature concerning the link between Lean Thinking and Project Management, with the existing literature mostly focusing on construction sector projects. However, interest in the connection between these concepts has grown in recent years, leading to more research in this area. Regarding the link between Lean Thinking and Project Management in the Information and Technology field, the research concluded that this is an emerging topic that has been increasingly investigated. Furthermore, this research allowed to conclude that the main sources of waste in Information and Technology sector projects are mostly linked to human behaviours that can be avoided or eliminated, and that these wastes have significant negative consequences for project efficiency.
