What characterises contemporary Portuguese dramaturgy? How should contemporary Portuguese dramaturgy be analysed? This remains a particularly fertile field for exploration within the academic context. This exploratory research proposal aims to reflect on the characterisation of contemporary Portuguese dramaturgy based on a collection of texts, and to discuss the methodological challenges and possibilities of a study of this scope. To achieve the defined objectives, this study analysed the corpus of texts from the Leituras no Mosteiro – regular dramatic text reading meetings organised by the Documentation Centre of the Teatro Nacional São João. During the first half of 2025 (the period under study), the programme's curation focused on contemporary Portuguese dramaturgy. The methodology adopted in the analysis of the works results from the adaptation and combination of models and categories of analysis that would enable a holistic evaluation and comparison of form, content, and context. The main conclusions suggest that contemporary Portuguese dramaturgy, which questions its form, its time and its memory, appears to define itself as a field of convergence between heritage (legacy and references), critical reflection (institutional, social and political) and openness to plural languages.
