Exploring the potential of probiotics for the prevention and treatment of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli associated infections

dc.description.abstract | Swine enteric colibacillosis is caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). The disease affects piglets during the neonatal period or post-weaning stage, resulting in dehydration diarrhoea and, in severe cases, the animal death. The controlo f the disease typically resorted to antibiotics, which use was banned in 2022. The increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics, as well as the role of heavy metals on the dissemination and persistance of antibiotic resistance genes, has prompted researchers to investigate alternative therapies for the prevention and treatment of enteric colibacillosis. Probiotics are among the most promising tools. In vitro assays were conducted to ascertain the potential of probiotics and their cell-free sepernatants in preventing ETEC infection. The results demonstrated that Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356, Lactobacillus helveticus ATCC 15009 and Lactiplanttibacillus plantarum FW0BV0887 exhibited the most pronounced antimicrobial activities. To validade the in vitro results, three potential probiotics were selected for evaluation of their anti-ETEC Effect in the in vivo Galleria mellonella model. The results demonstrated that Limosilactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55370 was ineffective in reducing infection. In contrast, Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 and Lactobacillus gasseri ATCC 33323 exhibited efficacy in attenuating ETEC infection. In conclusion, the study underscores the potential of probiotics as effective alternatives to traditional treatments for mitigating ETEC infection in swine. | por |
