Abstract(s)
Charles Valentin Alkan is one of the forgotten virtuosos of the 20th century, having only survived in a few histories of piano music. His work is nonetheless particularly interesting, thanks to a transcendental pianism, as well as to the idiosyncrasies and avant-garde features of his musical style. This project consists of three chapters. The first is a short biography of the composer based on the existing literature. The second analyzes his musical and personal relationship with Chopin, on the one hand and with Liszt, on the other. Finally, the last identifies the most avant-garde aspects of Alkan's work from a purely compositional point of view and from the more idiomatic prespective of pianism.
