Abstract(s)
As
Objective: Our research aims to evaluate the additional support needs of young people / adults with disabilities from Support and Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities - CARPD aged 16 to 40 years. We also seek to determine how their support needs vary depending on personal factors, the effective participation in the activities, the adequacy of the support provided by the environment and self-determination. Method: The study included 25 young people / adults with additional support needs. Next to each young / adult and his guardian / significant other was collected information on: (1) their need for support in activities of daily life by applying the Supports Intensity Scale (SIS); (2) the supports provided through the surroundings and the participation (or not) in the activities; (3) selfdetermination by applying the Self-Determination Scale (ARC). Results: Globally, the highest support needs are associated with youth / adults with higher levels of disability, less performing activities and lower levels of self-determination. The "Protection and Defense Activities", followed by "Lifelong Learning Activities" and "Labor and Employment Activities" are those where participants have a lower participation rate and where the support provided by context tends to be lower than necessary. The results will be discussed in the light of the need to involve all stakeholders in the communities in a concerted effort of, from an early stage (from school), starting to plan the future of young people / adults with disabilities, overlooking their life's project.
