Abstract(s)
O presente relatório de projeto vai expor e analisar as atividades e investigação
realizadas durante o desenvolvimento do presente projeto.
durante o desenvolvimento do projeto.
The present project report will expose and analyse the activities and research carried out during the development of this project. The main objective of the latter is translating the book 'O Outro Lado do Caminho', by the author Carlos Clemente, from Portuguese into British English. This book has a very religious and cultural character. Due to that, another issue that this project will address will be researching some cultural terms present in the novel in order to understand what the best translation technique for them is. Firstly, the report will have a short summary and presentation of the book translated during the development of the project. Next, there will be a theoretical approach to cultural translation, the main theme and, also, a theoretical approach to culture-specific terms known in the literature as CSI (Culture Specific-Items). After the theoretical approach, the research methodology for the study of the cultural terms present in the book will be exposed, followed by the study itself, which includes the presentation of data and interpretation of the results. The translation of the book will also be described, as well as all the difficulties and challenges encountered along the way. To finish, the report includes the conclusions drawn throughout the development of the project. The translation of cultural terms can be rather challenging and difficult to achieve because the mistranslation of certain cultural terms can lead to cultures feeling offended and that translation ends up becoming misinformation. Although some authors have already mentioned translation strategies for these terms, this report aims to contribute, in a way, to the study of this area, as well as to show the challenges of translating a work so focused on cultural aspects.
