Abstract(s)
In the absence of family background able to establish itself a safety and support net to the complete development of adolescents with measures of promotion and protection, the āApartamento de AutonomizaĆ§Ć£oā (Empowerment Flat) offers a place where young people can practise competences that will assure an autonomous future and will minimize the risk of social exclusion. This social response proposes to prepare adolescents to the transition to adulthood, so they can achieve the responsibility to protect and take care of themselves and assume their identity before others. However, a project of Empowerment of Life reveals itself a challenge not only for young people, but also for families and professionals who work with them. The difficulties inherent in the Empowerment of Life in institutional context were precisely the reason for the development of a project in education and social intervention, promoting the efficiency of this social response of empowerment promotion and a successful transition to adult life. This report is a backward glance at the project āTornar-se Adulto na Casa 5ā (āBecome adult on House 5ā), which, using the methodology of Participatory Investigation-Action, aimed to achieve the purpose suggested by the participants: āTo promote a complete empowerment on young people of House 5, in order to achieve a successful transition to adult life after the end of the promotion and protection measureā. Even though the results obtained were moderately satisfactory, the Project will contribute to the development of progressively more critical awareness about the opportunities and the constraints to the development of Empowerment, promoting the transition to adult life after the deinstitutionalization.
