Social media platforms, particularly Instagram, are used daily by millions of individuals, raising significant concerns regarding their potential impact on mental health, especially among young people. Frequent usage and the pursuit of validation through likes, comments, and follower counts may have detrimental effects on users' psychological well-being. However, the primary objective of this dissertation is to examine the impact of Instagram on the mental health of young individuals aged between 17 and 30, focusing on the platform’s effect on self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and body image perception. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, this study explores theories such as the Social Comparison Theory, which posits that the use of social networking sites may amplify tendencies toward comparison, leading to feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. Furthermore, the analysis addresses the effects of pressure to maintain an idealized image, a phenomenon prevalent on Instagram, which may contribute to dissatisfaction and negatively influence users' mental health. To complement the literature review, a questionnaire was administered to individuals within the target age range, aiming to gather data on their personal experiences and perceptions regarding the impact of Instagram on their mental health. The analysis of the collected data enabled the identification of correlations between Instagram use and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and body image disturbances.
