Com a evolução do mundo e da sociedade, a internacionalização tem servido de estratégia
para uma grande parte das organizações em todo mundo. Ainda assim, os efeitos deste
fenómeno na performance empresarial tem sido um tema de debate contínuo na literatura
científica.
Na ótica das empresas, a internacionalização é, por norma, vista como algo benéfico para
aquelas que procuram obter vantagens competitivas em mercados internacionais e
diversificados, no entanto, existem variações significativas do efeito da
internacionalização dependendo do setor estudado, empresas estudadas e metodologia
utilizada.
Este estudo tem como principal objetivo aprofundar a compreensão do impacto da
internacionalização nas empresas do setor automóvel português entre 2012 e 2021,
utilizando uma abordagem metodológica robusta baseada em regressões para dados em
painel com efeitos fixos.
Neste estudo é possível verificar a existência de um efeito positivo da internacionalização
sobre a performance empresarial, com resultados especialmente positivos na
internacionalização para mercados comunitários (embora negativos na
internacionalização para mercados extracomunitários). Ainda é possivel demonstrar que
o fator da dimensão das empresas é de grande importância para uma maior facilidade na
obtenção de melhores resultados através da internacionalização das mesmas, o que acaba
por significar uma melhor performance empresarial devido à internacionalização.
As the world and society have evolved, internationalization has become a strategy for many organizations around the world. Even so, the effects of this phenomenon on business performance have been a subject of ongoing debate in the scientific literature. From the point of view of companies, internationalization is generally seen as beneficial for those seeking to gain competitive advantages in international and diversified markets. However, there are significant variations in the effect of internationalization depending on the sector studied, the companies studied and the methodology used. The main objective of this study is to deepen our understanding of the impact of internationalization on companies in the Portuguese automotive sector between 2012 and 2021, using a robust methodological approach based on panel data regressions with fixed effects. In this study it is possible to verify the existence of a positive effect of internationalization on business performance, with particularly positive results in internationalization to EU markets (although negative in internationalization to non-EU markets). It is also possible to demonstrate that the factor of company size is of great importance in making it easier to obtain better results through internationalization, which ultimately means better business performance due to internationalization.
