Abstract(s)
The current global situation, in a context of globalization, makes foreign markets increasingly essential for the survival of companies. Companies have to look for different ways to maintain/increase their performance and sustainability, as they are surrounded by opportunities and threats. Thus, internationalization plays an important role in the competitiveness of companies, and this process, considered complex, is characterized by operational strategies that will generate important financial flows of products and knowledge for companies. In Portugal, the internationalization of companies is in an expansion phase, which is fundamental for the development of the economy. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent one of the main drivers of Portuguese economic progress, hence the need to study the internationalization process in order to understand how this process is carried out, what objectives to achieve, what strategies for survival and growth of these companies. Following a qualitative methodological approach, through a multiple case study, we sought to understand the internationalization process of three companies, belonging to the furniture sector, from the strategies and modalities that were applied by them to reach the levels where they are in present. The analysis of the cases under study allowed us to conclude that, regarding the entry mode adopted by the companies, they all opted for direct export as a way of exporting their products and, regarding the motivations that led these companies to internationalize, they all present internal motivations in common, such as the growth and expansion of the company.
