This internship report is part of the Master's Degree in Design, specialising in Product Design, at the Escola Superior de Media Artes e Design of the Politécnico do Porto, and describes the work developed at Porto Design Factory between December 2025 and July 2026. The central theme of the internship was product design as a mediator of experiences, exploring how objects, particularly furniture, shape ways of inhabiting, interacting and relating to space and to others. This theme was developed in conjunction with the design practice carried out at Porto Design Factory, where projects of various natures were conceived and produced, ranging from the development and expansion of the PORTIC furniture line to the design of institutional spaces for partner entities of the Politécnico do Porto. The theoretical framework underpinning the report draws on authors such as Norman (2002, 2004), Krippendorff (2006), Brandes, Stich and Wender (2007), Manzini (2015), Russo and Hekkert (2008) and Fernandes et al. (2025), articulating concepts such as user experience, object meaning and the social dimension of design. The methodological approach was essentially qualitative and reflective, based on the analysis of the projects developed during the internship, considering the theoretical framework constructed. Each project was treated as a case study, highlighting the mediating nature of product design in the relationship between users and the spaces they inhabit. The results confirm that product design, when oriented towards the user experience, can transform spaces, shape behaviours and build meaning.
