Abstract(s)
With the web expansion, the access to information grew and so did the possibility of involvement and participation in issues and movements abroad, especially for activists that expose in their work the social and political issues that they like to aware about and that use the web, more accurately the social networks, to reach to the society and to present na activism message. The serious games can also take advantage of the information obtained from the web, social networks and digital artistic artefacts, convert it in a specific context, and guide the player to become aware about the context presented. The serious games based on political and social themes are the focus of this thesis, with an analysis of existing digital games surrounding those contexts, to understand how can this type of technology contribute to the creation, disclosure and usage in the field of digital art artefacts. The practical component of this thesis includes the conception, development and implementation of a serious game in Unity, to aware people for political and social causes based on the Arab Spring movement in Egypt. With the aid of web content, this game uses digital artefacts obtained from the activist artist Carlos Latuff. This concept aims to simulate Cairo’s city environment and the adversities experienced by the population and the activists through a serious game, as a way of promoting the knowledge growth and the awareness of the players to the problems behind the Arab Spring in Egypt. The game tests realized in a test group have shown positive results in the options taken during the conception of the game, in the context taken about the Arab Spring in Egypt and in the awareness about the theme. So, it is possible to affirm that the usage of a serious game to aware about political and social causes can be assumed as a viable solution.
