Abstract(s)
In a landscape shaped by neoliberal globalisation, higher education has been going through major changes. The promoting of a competitive environment that values metrics and results, from which higher education institutions cannot escape, has marked the experiences of the institutions' leaders, as well as those of the teaching staff and researchers. The growing influence of supranational entities and processes such as the Bologna Process have contributed to greater pressure on institutions to adapt to the competitive global market, with effects on autonomy and on the production and dissemination of knowledge. This dissertation attempted to understand the perceptions of different institutional leaders, teaching staff and researchers on the effects of supranational influence on autonomy and the production and dissemination of knowledge in public higher education institutions in the field of Education Sciences in the cities of Porto and Lisbon. As a case study, the qualitative approach was implemented through seven semi-structured interviews and two focus groups. This was followed by a thematic analysis of the data. Based on the perceptions gathered during the data collection process, it was possible to understand that the supranational influence essentially translates into issues such as pressure to publish, access to funding, the definition of research agendas, institutional concern for reputation, among others. The results obtained encourage a reflection about the challenges that Portuguese higher education institutions face in the light of supranational influence, contributing to a discussion about the configuration of the autonom
