The present study is situated within the fields of inclusive education and differentiated instruction in Primary Education and aims to understand how individualized teaching and differentiated pedagogical practices are perceived and implemented by educational professionals, particularly in the context of English language teaching in Primary Education. Considering the increasing diversity found in contemporary classrooms—characterised by different learning paces, educational needs, behavioural profiles, socio-emotional competencies, and forms of student participation—the study sought to analyse the pedagogical strategies used to address this heterogeneity, as well as the constraints and facilitating conditions associated with the implementation of more individualized, differentiated, and inclusive educational practices. The study was conducted in a private school in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, within the framework of a teaching practicum undertaken during a master’s degree programme. The practicum involved the observation and implementation of pedagogical practices in English language teaching in Primary Education, including experiences related to the CLIL approach. Methodologically, the research follows a qualitative approach and adopts the characteristics of a case study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with primary school teachers, English teachers, a special educational support teacher, and the school psychologist. In addition, data from the teaching practicum, including reflective journal entries, field notes, and pedagogical materials developed during the intervention, were also considered. The data were analysed through thematic and content analysis, allowing the identification of key dimensions related to classroom diversity, conceptions of individualized teaching, differentiated instruction and inclusion, pedagogical strategies, assessment and learning monitoring processes, professional collaboration, and challenges associated with the implementation of inclusive practices. The theoretical framework draws on perspectives related to student-centred education, differentiated instruction, inclusive pedagogy, and teacher professional development, highlighting the contributions of Tomlinson (2014), Florian and Black-Hawkins (2011), Cruz (2010), Hattie (2012), UNESCO (2020), Alarcão (2003, 2009), and Schön (1983), among others. The findings reveal that participants recognise classroom heterogeneity as one of the most significant characteristics of contemporary educational contexts and emphasise the importance of adapting pedagogical practices to students’ individual needs. Both the interviews and the practicum records highlight the use of diverse strategies, including the adaptation of materials and activities, scaffolding techniques, visual and manipulative resources, individualized support, collaborative work, flexible assessment practices, and the promotion of emotionally safe and participatory learning environments. The findings also underline the importance of pedagogical relationships, professional collaboration, and continuous assessment as key elements in promoting more inclusive educational practices. However, participants identified several constraints related to time management, class size, limited human and material resources, and organisational limitations that hinder the consistent implementation of genuinely individualized practices. Overall, the study reinforces the importance of flexible, inclusive, and student-centred pedagogical practices, while also highlighting the challenges associated with the implementation of individualized teaching and differentiated instruction in contemporary educational contexts. The findings further emphasise the relevance of reflective practice, continuous professional development, collaborative work, and adequate institutional conditions in promoting educational responses that are better suited to classroom diversity, particularly in the context of English language teaching in Primary Education.
