Neste ensaio será proposta uma reflexão sobre o tema ambiental no âmbito do cinema
documental, debruçando-nos em particular sobre filmes que podemos, de uma forma
abrangente, englobar na categoria do eco-documentário. Iremos investigar como diferentes
propostas documentais articulam discurso ecológico e abordagem estética, identificando
variadas formas de comunicação e de relacionamento com o espetador. Procuraremos retirar
conclusões sobre o que estas diferentes abordagens documentais sinalizam enquanto
propostas éticas ou filosóficas de posicionamento do ser humano perante o Antropoceno. No
contexto deste enquadramento será igualmente analisada a curta-metragem documental The
Closing of a Refinery, realizada pelo próprio no contexto do mestrado em Comunicação
Audiovisual, especialização em Fotografia e Cinema Documental, da Escola Superior de Media
Artes e Design (ESMAD), procurando relacionar os temas anteriormente mencionados com a
prática cinematográfica na conceção e realização deste filme.
This essay proposes a meditation on the environmental theme within the context of documentary filmmaking, taking in particular films that can be categorized within an overarching definition of eco-documentary. We will investigate how different documental proposals articulate ecological discourse and aesthetic approach, identifying a variety of ways of communication and relationship with the viewer. We’ll strive to reach conclusions on what those different approaches can signify as ethical and philosophical proposals of how humanity positions itself within the Anthropocene. In the context of this frame we’ll also analyze the short documentary film The Closing of a Refinery, directed by myself within the context of my master’s degree in Audiovisual Communication, specialization in Photography and Documentary Film, from the institute Escola Superior de Media Artes e Design (ESMAD), while trying to relate the previously mentioned themes with the filmmaking practice in this film.
