Effect of Scan Strategies and Use of Support Structures on Surface Quality and Hardness of L-PBF AlSi10Mg Parts

Additive manufacturing allows for a great degree of design freedom and is rapidly becoming a mainstream manufacturing process. However, as in all manufacturing processes, it has its limitations and specificities. Equipping engineers with this knowledge allows for a higher degree of optimization, extracting the most out of this technology. Therefore, a specific part design was devised and created via L-PBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) using AlSi10Mg powder. Certain parameters were varied to identify the influence on material density, hardness, roughness, residual stress and microstructures. It was found that on heat treated parts laser pattern strategy is one of the most influential aspects, showing that chessboard and stripes 67° improved outcome; average Ra roughness varied between 8–12 µm, residual stress was higher on vertical surfaces than horizontal surfaces, with the combination of support structures and stripes 67° strategies generating the lowest residual stress (205 MPa on a lateral/vertical face), hardness was non-orientation dependent and larger on samples with chessboard fabrication strategies, while microstructures were composed of α–Al dendrites surrounded by Si particles. The distribution and grain size of the microstructure is dependent on location regarding melt pool and HAZ area. Furthermore, Al–Mg oxides were encountered on the surface, along with pores generating from lack of fusion.
Quality Assessment of Laser Welding Dual Phase Steels

Since non-conforming parts create waste for industry, generating undesirable costs, it is necessary to set up quality plans that not only guarantee product conformity but also cut the root causes of welding defects by developing the concept of quality at origin. Due to their increasing use in automotive industry, dual phase (DP) steels have been the chosen material for this study. A quality plan for welding DP steel components by laser was developed. This plan is divided into three parts: pre-welding, during and post-welding. A quality assessment regarding mechanical properties, such as hardness, microstructure and tensile strength, was also performed. It was revealed that DP steel does not present considerable weldability problems, except for the usual softening of the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the growth of martensite in the fusion zone (FZ), and the best analysis techniques to avoid failures in these steels are finite element method (FEM), visual techniques during welding procedure and digital image correlation (DIC) for post-weld analysis.
Correlating the Effect of Covid-19 Lockdown with Mobility Impacts: A Time Series Study Using Noise Sensors Data

The Covid-19 crisis forced governments around the world to rapidly enact several restrictions to face the
associated health emergency. The Portuguese government was no exception and, following the example of other countries, established various limitations to flat the contagions curve. This led to inevitable repercussions on mobility and environmental indicators including noise. This research aims to assess the impact of the lockdown due to Covid-19 disease on the noise levels recorded in the city of Porto, Portugal. Data from four noise sensors located in strategic spots of the city were used to calibrate and validate Time Series Models, allowing to impute the missing values in the datasets and rebuild them. The trend and the cyclic information were extracted from the reconstructed datasets using decomposition techniques. Finally, a Spearman correlation analysis between noise levels values and traffic volumes (extracted from five inductive loop detectors, located nearby the noise sensors) was performed. Results show that the noise levels series present a daily seasonal pattern and the trends values decreased from 6.7 to 7.5 dBA during the first lockdown period (March-May 2020). Moreover, the noise levels tend to gradually rise after the removal of restrictions. Finally, there is a monotonic relationship between noise levels and traffic volumes values, as confirmed by the positive moderate-to-high correlation coefficients found, and the sharp drop of the former during March-May 2020 can be attributed to the strong reduction of road traffic flows in the city.
