- Non-specific low back pain, sleep and quality of life in teachers: cross-sectional studyPublication . Sousa, Nicole Segura; Miranda, Leonor G.; Bohn, LuciméreTo analyse the association between non-specific low back pain and sleep (duration and quality) and quality of life in primary and secondary school teachers. Analytical observational study. An online questionnaire was used, comprising: the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the World Health Organisation's Abbreviated Quality of Life Assessment Instrument. The student’s t-test, chi-square test, and multiple linear regression (stepwise) were used. The sample (n=100) consisted mainly of female teachers (85.0%). More than half (n=56) reported non-specific low back pain, and the mean intensity of low back pain was 2.71 (± 3.09), with a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 10. Teachers without low back pain reported better sleep quality (p=0.004) and higher overall quality of life (p<0.001), physical (p=0.023) and psychological (p=0.015). Sleep quality (p<0.001) and low back pain intensity (p=0.002) significantly explain approximately 26.8% (adjusted R2 = 0.268) of the variance in quality of life. This study suggests a significant association between low back pain, sleep, and quality of life in teachers. It shows that sleep quality and low back pain intensity are significant predictors of their quality of life. This work seems to draw attention to the prevention of low back pain, promotion of sleep, and quality of life in teachers. However, further studies are needed to clarify this issue.
