- Global and recent trends in Halal tourismPublication . Liberato, Pedro; Liberato, Dália; Sousa, Bruno Barbosa; Malheiro, Maria AlexandraThe destinations, worldwide, have seen a progressive increase in international arrivals, consolidating their position in the international context, on the one hand, but also diversifying the source markets. The United Nations World Tourism Organization predicts 69 million Halal tourists for 2020, representing an average annual growth rate of 6.7% between 1995 and 2020. Halal tourism has seen a growth in total number of tourists, in receipts volume, and a growth of niches, such as women and some generations, promoting a special interest in DMO’s. Considering these aspects, it is a constant challenge for tourist destinations to adapt to the Halal market, thus reinforcing their competitiveness and developing the branding and image of the destination. Destinations should prepare their offer, considering the specificities of each of those niches, ensuring good performance in terms of satisfaction, and behavioural intentions, to recommend and return to destination. This article intends to present a diagnosis regarding Halal tourism in a global perspective, considering several emerging niches, and presenting opportunities concerning tourism destination management.
- Managing market segments with environmental concerns: geotourism and geodiversityPublication . Sousa, Bruno Barbosa; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Liberato, Pedro; Liberato, DáliaTourism is a multifaceted and geographically complex activity, with tourism increasingly creating new (and different) market segments with different individual interests. These segments are characterized by the motivations that make them travel and, in turn, by the differentiation of the existing offer. On the other hand, and in a recent tourist segment, geotourism, geotourists seek to enjoy contact with nature, perform sports activities and acquire authentic experiences. The present study aims to explore how this niche has developed, so it will be presented a contextualization of the concepts that are related to geotourism. Therefore, initially an approach to geodiversity and Geoconservation will be made (essential elements of this type of tourism) that will help to better understand the concept of geotourism, followed by a trip to the geosites that will end in the geoparks. Like companies, tourist destinations can also develop their own brands, becoming increasingly different and competitive destinations. Thus, this study aims to better understand the role of marketing applied to places and territories as a contribution to the tourist segmentation. In particular, a conceptual model is proposed to be tested empirically in geotourism contexts. In the end, some limitations and lines of investigation for the future will be presented. In an interdisciplinary perspective, this study presents inputs from the perspective of tourism and marketing (segmentation and consumer behavior of geotourism).
- Special interest trends for glamping: preliminary insights in Portuguese contextPublication . Jessica, Eliane; Sousa, Bruno Barbosa; Liberato, PedroSustainability in tourism is a necessary path for the tourism sector on a global scale. Tourist practice now considers the environmental, economic, and social impact in the present and the future. Responsible use of natural resources, preservation of the sociocultural authenticity of local communities, and ensuring long-term economic sustainability are fundamental. In the context of tourist activities that promote direct contact with nature, it is crucial to intensify efforts to prevent any form of environmental negligence (e.g., glamping in specific Portuguese contexts). From an interdisciplinary perspective, this study provides insights into marketing and segmented tourism (in the context of nature and glamping). Future studies should make it possible to develop some of the limitations presented in this chapter.
- Sustainability in tourism and hospitality: trends and challengesPublication . Malheiro, Alexandra; Sousa, Bruno Barbosa; Liberato, Dália; Liberato, PedroTourism and hospitality are increasingly recognized as one of the main impulses of economy, both in the European context and worldwide. The concept of sustainability has been widely debated socially and in the context of scientific research for the past two decades. When applied to the hospitality sector, investigation towards this topic is more recent and raises several issues that can be seen as challenges but also as sources of competitive advantage. In this article we seek to explore the concept of sustainability in the context of hospitality, making a theoretical review of the main lines of research and launching clues to those that may be the future lines of investigation in this context. The digital world has come to challenge companies, approaching everyone everywhere. Challenges that extend to all levels, not only economic, but also at a relational level, since the relationships themselves, and the way in which people relate and behave, have also undergone modifications. Two examples (best practices) of sustainability in communication will be presented, in specific contexts of hospitality and tourism (in Portugal). This research presents contributions to sustainability, tourism, hospitality and communication. At the end, guidelines for the future will be presented.
- Terrorism trends in tourism researchPublication . Liberato, Pedro; Liberato, Dália; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Sousa, Bruno BarbosaTourism is a vulnerable sector in many aspects, either by nature factors or by human factors such as wars, rebellions, or terrorism, being the image of tourist destinations a fundamental asset for territories trying to attract tourists and wealth. Some recent studies concluded about the obvious negative impacts from terrorism to tourism, affecting costs regarding later protection and promotion, while others consider that terrorism may not impact tourism because of the iconic destination reputation. This article aims to discuss recent trends in the literature review addressing perspectives of 2019 and 2020 studies, published in the context of tourism, terrorism, political instability, and behaviour of tourists towards the intention of travelling. The conclusions present suggestions for approach in future studies, minimizing the impact of large destructive occurrences on destinations.
- Tourism sustainable planning in low density territories and the post (disaster) pandemic contextPublication . Liberato, Pedro; Sousa, Bruno Barbosa; Costa, Márcia; Liberato, DáliaThe evolution of tourism must be framed into policies that aim a development model perspective for the destinations, based on the analysis of economic, political, and social indicators. Therefore, emerging destinations, located in territories with low population density, should be a target of a careful strategy policy, considering the characteristics of the region. In particular, the disaster caused by the pandemic context (i.e., COVID-19) implied profound changes in tourism thinking, planning, and development of regions in Portugal and throughout the world. The present chapter proposes the creation of a tourism monitoring system for Arouca (Portugal), a territory classified as Low-Density Territory, with specific characteristics. The monitoring will involve the planning and management of database, at the disposal of all stakeholders, ensuring that the tourism flows in analysis do not get overwhelmed, allowing the discussion of opportunities and threats for the territory, based on the partnership between the population, public and private sector, adjusted to the social, cultural, economic, and environment perception. Will also be considered the perspective of the local community from Arouca's region, the main actors from the territory such as Geopark Association of Arouca and the City Council, according to the surveys used as data basis of this study, along with statistics analysis.
