- A deafening inequality. Portuguese deaf education and the call for debationg audism in schoolsPublication . Schwachten, Lejo; Santos, Miguel Augusto; Gonçalves, Vítor TétéThe emancipation of the deaf community represents a vivid history in which the right to use sign language and deaf culture had to be defended over and over again, against oralists, scientists, politicians, industries and pedagogues. It is a history of hearing oppression, of different views about what makes one human. In this article, the authors give a historical account from an audist perspective and question if it is not urgent to promote another pedagogical approach in the education of deaf and hearing, which include debating personal and structural audism in schools.

- Project Hand in HandPublication . Sanches-Ferreira, Manuela; Tavares, Ana Gabriela; Vale, Maria do Carmo; Santos, Miguel Augusto; Maia, Mónica Silveira; Martins, Susana IsabelThe project “Parents and Teachers Working Hand in Hand : Training Programme for Parents and Teachers of Pupils with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” was prepared and co-ordinated by Ankara Provincial Directorate for National Education under the European Union Education and Youth Programme, Lifelong Learning Programme within the framework of Grundtvig Learning Partnership. At the planning stage of the project, as the co-ordinating institution, we wanted to prepare a project for pupils with ADHD because we know that, across the world, almost 5% of students suffer from this disorder and they encounter difficulties in their academic life, in their community and in their social relationships. Both parents and teachers encounter difficulties while they are supporting pupils with ADHD in their school lives. As the second biggest local education authority in Turkey, we decided to prepare this project for parents and teachers of pupils with ADHD to make everyone’s life easier. We shared our thoughts with different people and institutions from different countries and we realised that it is not only a problem in Turkey but also for other countries. As a result, we developed project partnerships with various educational institutions, universities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from different countries. The project development stage was completed after contributions from all partners. Initially we had started with 8 partners but after approval for the project and the agreement of National Agencies of each partner countries, we implemented the project with 6 partners starting from 1st October 2007 to 31st July 2009.

- Virtual reality and associated technologies in disability research and interventionPublication . Lopes-dos-Santos, Pedro; Silveira-Maia, Mónica; Tavares, Ana; Santos, Miguel Augusto; Sanches-Ferreira, ManuelaThis paper concerns the application of virtual reality and associated technologies (VRAT) in the disability research and intervention field. By reviewing a 144 studies presented at the International Conference Series on Disability, Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies (1996-2006), our analytic work examine the underlying conceptual frameworks of disability and methodological rationales used in selected papers. In the last 15 years, there was a paradigmatic shift from the medical to the biopsychosocial model of disability. Yet, our analyses indicate that such shift is not clearly reflected in the way VRAT have been addressing disability issues. The present manuscript offers recommendations regarding definition of goals, methodological procedures, and assessment rationales in order to stimulate discussions on how the use of VRAT can be improved in the field of disability research and practice
