Rocha, Ricardo; Neves, Maria Paula; Girão, Mariana; Carvalho, M. Fátima; Oliveira, Rui S.; Santos, JoanaOccupational exposure to fungi in the cork industry is responsible for several respiratory problems and can be influenced by factors such as automation level of the production process, type of ventilation, storage conditions and cooking times of cork boards. Thus, the main objective of this study was to evaluated and identified fungal species existing in the air and surfaces of slicing and punching workplaces in cork small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). Air and surfaces samples were collected in five cork SMEs, included a total of eighteen workplaces. The collection of pure fungal colonies and their respective isolation was performed by plaque scoring technique, and DNA extraction, followed by the PCR technique and sequencing. The fungi identified were Penicillium glabrum and Neurospora spp. Improve the ventilation and storage conditions, as well as increase automation level of the production can reduce the risk of occupational exposure in SMEs.
- Occupational exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation: A systematic review of protective measuresPublication . Rocha, Ricardo; Santos, Joana; Baptista, João Santos; Guedes, Joana; Carvalhais, Carlos; Alberto Alves Carvalhais, Carlos; Santos, JoanaSolar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen and poses a significant occupational hazard to outdoor workers. Despite preventive guidelines, adherence to protective measures remains inconsistent. This systematic review identified the protective measures adopted by healthy outdoor workers and assessed their adherence to and the effectiveness of these measures. Following the PRISMA 2020 statement, the review searched Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed for peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025. Eligible studies included at least 100 healthy participants and evaluated preventive or protective measures against solar UVR. Independent reviewers extracted data and assessed risk of bias using the McMaster Critical Review Form. From 17,756 records, 51 studies met the inclusion criteria after screening and a subsequent snowballing process. The identified protective strategies clustered into physical, behavioural, and organisational categories. Adherence ranged from low to moderate, with structured interventions and employer support improving compliance. Sunscreen use remained low due to perceived inconvenience and lack of provision. Overall, the evidence revealed substantial variability in implementation and effectiveness across occupations. Strengthened regulations and integrated interventions combining education, personal protective equipment, and organisational measures are essential. Future research should prioritise longitudinal designs and objective indicators such as biomarkers and dosimetry.
- Safety and health conditions in construction sites from the perspective of site safety coordinationPublication . Rocha, Ricardo; Alberto Alves Carvalhais, Carlos; Santos, JoanaThe numerous risk factors present in the construction sector make it one of the factors with the highest number of accidents at work, and it can drive to the development of occupational diseases. So, it becomes important to comply with national and community legal provisions, namely, compliance with Decree-Law nº. 273/2003, of 29 October. The latter foresees the mandatory presence of a Health and Safety Coordinator in shipyards, with no exceptions discriminated in the legal diploma. The main objective of this study was to verify the safety and health conditions in civil construction works, analysing the compliance with the Safety and Health Plan of the construction phase and the legal requirements in force. In order to achieve the objective of this study, a verification tool was developed, divided into nineteen chapters and applied to thirty construction sites, where the number of questions in Compliance (C) and Non-Compliance (NC) was verified. After its application, it was highlighted that the chapter with the highest absolute number of NC corresponded to works at height. The presence of a Safety Coordinator on site is essential in order to guarantee the application of safety measures, namely those described in the Safety and Health Plan of the site, compliance with current legislation, and the guarantee of safety and health conditions for all workers on site
