- Literary tourism: literature developments and research lines from 2015 to 2020Publication . Rodrigues, Cristina; Liberato, Dália; Esteves, Elsa; Sousa, Bruno; Liberato, Pedro; Costa, Adriano; Pereira, Carina; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Carvalho, PedroAlthough literary tourism is still an understudied field, the beneficial relationship between tourism and literature is becoming very clear. Literary tourism involves the literary heritage of places, namely visits to sites related to literary works and the lives of writers. There are already some empirical studies that demonstrate the importance of this type of tourism as a guarantee of cultural enrichment of destinations and sustainable tourism practices. This tourism has begun to be explored in the development of tourism products and experiences, such as itineraries, or infrastructures linked to literary heritage that increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of destinations. This study analyzes literary tourism as a field of research and explores its state of the art through a bibliometric review that includes content analysis. For this purpose, articles published in the period 2015–2020, identified in the Web of Science database, were analyzed. The results identify the main topics of these publications and their temporal analysis, the research methods and techniques applied, the case studies related to authors and works, also the geographies studied and some important insights on literary tourism that address different dimensions. Overall, this study provides a rich understanding of the contemporary study of literary tourism, in a particularly rich period in terms of scientific advances in this area, still under-expressed.
- A preliminary assessment of a stool-based microRNA profile for early colorectal cancer screeningPublication . Santos, Daniela A. R.; Eiras, Mariana; Gonzalez-Santos, Miguel; Santos, Marlene; Pereira, Carina; Santos, Lúcio Lara; Dinis-Ribeiro, Mário; Lima, Luís; Santos, MarleneColorectal cancer screening methods are well established worldwide as a fundamental pilar in CRC management, namely through non-invasive faecal occult blood testing. However, the limited sensitivity of faecal occult blood test for detecting precancerous lesions highlights the need to search for alternative tools, such as microRNAs (miRs). The main aim of this study was to identify stoolbased miR profiles for early colorectal cancer detection. A panel with miR-21-5p, miR-199a-5p, and age showed a moderate performance for colorectal cancer detection (sensitivity: 88%). Additionally, miR-451a, miR-21-5p, miR-199a-5p, age, and gender showed high performance for discriminating high-grade dysplasia lesions (sensitivity: 91%). Moreover, when we obtained a positive result in either panel, we achieved a sensitivity of 96% for high-grade dysplasia lesions identification. Finally, when a negative result was obtained in these panels after a positive faecal occult blood test result, we accurately identified individuals without lesions. These findings demonstrate the potential of miR panels as non-invasive biomarkers for colorectal cancer and high-grade dysplasia lesions detection and could constitute a secondary screening method following a positive faecal occult blood test.
- A preliminary perspective on motivations in literary tourism: an exploratory study in Northern PortugalPublication . Sousa, Bruno; Liberato, Pedro; Pereira, Carina; Rodrigues, Cristina; Costa, Adriano; Malheiro, Alexandra; Carvalho, Pedro; Esteves, Elsa; Liberato, Dália; Liberato, DáliaLiterary tourism includes moments and visits to places related to literary works and their writers and is categorized as cultural tourism. The motivation of literary tourists can vary between the desire to find some intellectual exchange in these spaces or an interest in expressing their admiration, the desire to honor writers, their work or literature. The purpose of this chapter is to understand the specific motivations of literary tourism consumers in the northern region of Portugal. The main push and pull motivations of literary consumers in the study region are presented. A questionnaire was administered to tourist consumers between July and October 2023. A total of 301 responses were received, 191 from domestic visitors and 110 from foreign visitors. Authors hope to contribute to the promotion of tourism policies geared toward the development of new products and experiences, based on the identity and specificities of the different territories involved, with relevant authors and works. From an interdisciplinary perspective, the chapter presents insights for literary tourism, marketing strategy and regional development.
