- Globalização e desigualdade: uma aplicação à África SubsarianaPublication . Oliveira, Ana Carolina Lopes de; Machado, Celsa Maria de Carvalho; Saraiva, António Fernando Martins GarciaGlobalization and income inequality are two significant subjects that have been gaining notoriety throughout the years. The main focus of these studies is to understand how globalization and income inequality are linked and how these two phenomena affect each other. However, regarding Sub-Saharan countries, literature concerning the relationship between globalization and income inequality is scarce and the results are also contradictory. Thus, this dissertation aims not only to contribute with additional data to clarify the relation between globalization and income inequality in Sub-Saharan countries but also intends to verify if this relationship is linear or non-linear. Thereby, this work presents a quantitative study, where through a static model and a dynamic model using panel data and random effects, the relation between globalization and income inequality in 27 Sub-Saharan African countries from 1971 to 2015 is analyzed. Through the results obtained in this dissertation, we reach two main conclusions. In the first place, it is concluded that globalization and income inequality have a positive and linear relationship, which contradicts the established theories. In the second place, income inequality and the development of the financial system have an inverted U-shaped relationship, which means that in the long term, the development of the financial system seems to be reducing income inequality in the Sub-Saharan countries.
