- Controlling the operating conditions in an Operating RoomPublication . Rosa, C.; Costa, A.; Fernandes, E.; Cardoso, F.; Guimarães, P. S.; Alves, J.; Silva, I.; Marques, M. A.In this paper, we describe the development of a module capable of controlling environmental conditions, personnel movement and management of other important parameters for an operating room (OR) or surgery block. The base of assembly uses a real-life small scale model trying to simulate the systematic functionality of an OR as well as its crucial components. These include the regulation of environmental parameters, logging of entries and exits by the staff, management of pharmaceutical drugs and diseases, and the statistical analysis of several acquired data. The project integrates different types of technologies, such as the microcontroller Arduino, a bidirectional communication interface between this device and a computer, a web based user interface for dynamic interaction, as well as database concepts for data management.

- Developing the control system of a syringe infusion pumpPublication . Assunção, R.; Barbosa, P.; Ruge, R.; Guimarães, P. S.; Alves, J.; Silva, I.; Marques, M. A.Infusion pumps have multiple uses according to their location. According to its use, there is a need to control specific parameters. The objective of this work is to implement and to assembly all the modules of an infusion pump, controlling all the functions. The control was implemented with the microcontroller board based Arduino and a webpage was developed to assist the user to record, retrieve and access information about the operating conditions.

- VISIR deployment in undergraduate engineering practicesPublication . Tawfik, Mohamed; Sancristobal, Elio; Martin, Sergio; Gil, Charo; Pesquera, Alberto; Losada, Pablo; Diaz, Gabriel; Peire, Juan; Castro, Manuel; Garcia-Zubia, Javier; Hernández-Jayo, Unai; Orduña, Pablo; Angulo, Ignacio; Lobo, M. C. Costa; Marques, M. A.; Viegas, M.C.; Alves, Gustavo R.Practical sessions are the backbone of qualification in engineering education. It leads to a better understanding and allows mastering scientific concepts and theories. The lack of the availability of practical sessions at many universities and institutions owing to the cost and the unavailability of instructors the most of the time caused a significant decline in experimentation in engineering education over the last decades. Recently, with the progress of computer-based learning, remote laboratories have been proven to be the best alternative to the traditional ones, regarding to its low cost and ubiquity. Some universities have already started to deploy remote labs in their practical sessions. This contribution compiles diverse experiences based on the deployment of the remote laboratory, Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality (VISIR), on the practices of undergraduate engineering grades at various universities within the VISIR community. It aims to show the impact of its usage on engineering education concerning the assessments of students and teachers as well.
