- Global and recent trends in Halal tourismPublication . Liberato, Pedro; Liberato, Dália; Sousa, Bruno Barbosa; Malheiro, Maria AlexandraThe destinations, worldwide, have seen a progressive increase in international arrivals, consolidating their position in the international context, on the one hand, but also diversifying the source markets. The United Nations World Tourism Organization predicts 69 million Halal tourists for 2020, representing an average annual growth rate of 6.7% between 1995 and 2020. Halal tourism has seen a growth in total number of tourists, in receipts volume, and a growth of niches, such as women and some generations, promoting a special interest in DMO’s. Considering these aspects, it is a constant challenge for tourist destinations to adapt to the Halal market, thus reinforcing their competitiveness and developing the branding and image of the destination. Destinations should prepare their offer, considering the specificities of each of those niches, ensuring good performance in terms of satisfaction, and behavioural intentions, to recommend and return to destination. This article intends to present a diagnosis regarding Halal tourism in a global perspective, considering several emerging niches, and presenting opportunities concerning tourism destination management.
- Literary tourism: literature developments and research lines from 2015 to 2020Publication . Rodrigues, Cristina; Liberato, Dália; Esteves, Elsa; Sousa, Bruno; Liberato, Pedro; Costa, Adriano; Pereira, Carina; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Carvalho, PedroAlthough literary tourism is still an understudied field, the beneficial relationship between tourism and literature is becoming very clear. Literary tourism involves the literary heritage of places, namely visits to sites related to literary works and the lives of writers. There are already some empirical studies that demonstrate the importance of this type of tourism as a guarantee of cultural enrichment of destinations and sustainable tourism practices. This tourism has begun to be explored in the development of tourism products and experiences, such as itineraries, or infrastructures linked to literary heritage that increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of destinations. This study analyzes literary tourism as a field of research and explores its state of the art through a bibliometric review that includes content analysis. For this purpose, articles published in the period 2015–2020, identified in the Web of Science database, were analyzed. The results identify the main topics of these publications and their temporal analysis, the research methods and techniques applied, the case studies related to authors and works, also the geographies studied and some important insights on literary tourism that address different dimensions. Overall, this study provides a rich understanding of the contemporary study of literary tourism, in a particularly rich period in terms of scientific advances in this area, still under-expressed.
- Managing market segments with environmental concerns: geotourism and geodiversityPublication . Sousa, Bruno Barbosa; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Liberato, Pedro; Liberato, DáliaTourism is a multifaceted and geographically complex activity, with tourism increasingly creating new (and different) market segments with different individual interests. These segments are characterized by the motivations that make them travel and, in turn, by the differentiation of the existing offer. On the other hand, and in a recent tourist segment, geotourism, geotourists seek to enjoy contact with nature, perform sports activities and acquire authentic experiences. The present study aims to explore how this niche has developed, so it will be presented a contextualization of the concepts that are related to geotourism. Therefore, initially an approach to geodiversity and Geoconservation will be made (essential elements of this type of tourism) that will help to better understand the concept of geotourism, followed by a trip to the geosites that will end in the geoparks. Like companies, tourist destinations can also develop their own brands, becoming increasingly different and competitive destinations. Thus, this study aims to better understand the role of marketing applied to places and territories as a contribution to the tourist segmentation. In particular, a conceptual model is proposed to be tested empirically in geotourism contexts. In the end, some limitations and lines of investigation for the future will be presented. In an interdisciplinary perspective, this study presents inputs from the perspective of tourism and marketing (segmentation and consumer behavior of geotourism).
- Terrorism trends in tourism researchPublication . Liberato, Pedro; Liberato, Dália; Malheiro, Maria Alexandra; Sousa, Bruno BarbosaTourism is a vulnerable sector in many aspects, either by nature factors or by human factors such as wars, rebellions, or terrorism, being the image of tourist destinations a fundamental asset for territories trying to attract tourists and wealth. Some recent studies concluded about the obvious negative impacts from terrorism to tourism, affecting costs regarding later protection and promotion, while others consider that terrorism may not impact tourism because of the iconic destination reputation. This article aims to discuss recent trends in the literature review addressing perspectives of 2019 and 2020 studies, published in the context of tourism, terrorism, political instability, and behaviour of tourists towards the intention of travelling. The conclusions present suggestions for approach in future studies, minimizing the impact of large destructive occurrences on destinations.
