- Chronic effects of aerobic exercise on panic disorder: a systematic review of randomized and non-randomized trialsPublication . Lattari, Eduardo; Paes, Flávia; Machado, Ana; Rocha, Nuno Barbosa Ferreira; Nardi, Antônio Egidio; Machado, SérgioIn general, most studies have supported an association between the acute effects of exercise and a reduced state anxiety, but failed to completely explain the relationship between the chronic effect of exercise and anxiety traits. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding the chronic effect of exercise on symptoms associated with panic disorder. The studies were retrieved from a MEDLINE/PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and SciELO. We adopted PICOS’s strategy recommended to determine the eligibility criteria. The survey was conducted using an advanced search in the ISI Web of Science and MEDLINE / PubMed with MeSH terms and Entry Terms for the keywords “Panic Disorder” basis and “Exercise”. Boolean operators “AND” and “OR” were used separately or in combination. Two independent researchers performed the selection of studies; in case of disagreement they sought a consensus on the selection. A total of 265 articles were identified: 199 articles from PubMed/Medline, 63 articles from ISI Web of Science and 3 articles by manual searches. Thus, 31 articles were analyzed by the eligibility criteria and the exclusion criteria, a total of five studies included in the systematic review. The regular practice of aerobic exercise seems to be an appropriate intervention to promote improvements in the severity of anxiety symptoms in PD patients.
- Estrogen Metabolism-Associated CYP2D6 and IL6-174G/C Polymorphisms in Schistosoma haematobium InfectionPublication . Squamous cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder (SCC) constitutes chronic sequelae of this infection, and S. haematobium infection is accounted as a risk factor for this type of cancer. This infection is considered a neglected tropical disease and is endemic in numerous countries in Africa and the Middle East. Schistosome eggs produce catechol-estrogens. These estrogenic molecules are metabolized to active quinones that induce modifications in DNA. The cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes are a superfamily of mono-oxygenases involved in estrogen biosynthesis and metabolism, the generation of DNA damaging procarcinogens, and the response to anti-estrogen therapies. IL6 Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine expressed in various tissues. This cytokine is largely expressed in the female urogenital tract as well as reproductive organs. Very high or very low levels of IL-6 are associated with estrogen metabolism imbalance. In the present study, we investigated the polymorphic variants in the CYP2D6 gene and the C-174G promoter polymorphism of the IL-6 gene on S. haematobium-infected children patients from Guine Bissau. CYP2D6 inactivated alleles (28.5%) and IL6G-174C (13.3%) variants were frequent in S. haematobium-infected patients when compared to previously studied healthy populations (4.5% and 0.05%, respectively). Here we discuss our recent findings on these polymorphisms and whether they can be predictive markers of schistosome infection and/or represent potential biomarkers for urogenital schistosomiasis associated bladder cancer and infertility.
- Screening of fluoroquinolones in environmental waters using disk-based solid-phase extraction combined to microplate fluorimetric determination and LC-MS/MSPublication . C.; Segundo, Marcela A.Fluoroquinolones are in the order of the day concerning environmental contamination through anthropogenic activities, resulting in increased risk for antibiotic resistance dissemination. In this context, accessible, low-cost analytical methods are required for implementation of comprehensive surveillance and screening schemes. In this work, we propose a down-scaled disk-based solid-phase extraction system from which the eluate can be first screened by miniaturized fluorimetric reading, followed by individual determination of target fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and enrofloxacin) by liquid chromatography combined to tandem mass spectrometry. The fluorimetric measurement is based on the intrinsic fluorescence of fluoroquinolones. Disk-based retention was performed after sample acidification (pH 4.0) by mixed-mode cation exchange using polystyrene divinylbenzene sulphonated sorbent. Sample loading was precisely controlled in a dedicated flow system operating at 4.0 mL min−1. Different eluent compositions were tested, with elution performed by 1.00 mL of methanol-ammonium hydroxide (98:2, v/v), with subsequent reading of eluate in both detectors. Quantification was attained for 2–25 µg L−1 range, with LOD values at 1 µg L−1. The proposed approach was successfully applied to estuarine waters from the Douro River, with comparable results to a conventional SPE-LC-MS/MS procedure.
