- Creating and optimizing client-server applications on mobile devicesPublication . Anacleto, Ricardo; Luz, Nuno; Almeida, Ana; Figueiredo, Lino; Novais, PauloMobile devices are embedded systems with very limited capacities that need to be considered when developing a client-server application, mainly due to technical, ergonomic and economic implications to the mobile user. With the increasing popularity of mobile computing, many developers have faced problems due to low performance of devices. In this paper, we discuss how to optimize and create client-server applications for in wireless/mobile environments, presenting techniques to improve overall performance.
- A hybrid recommendation approach for a tourism systemPublication . Lucas, Joel P.; Luz, Nuno; Moreno, María; Anacleto, Ricardo; Almeida, Ana; Martins, ConstantinoMany current e-commerce systems provide personalization when their content is shown to users. In this sense, recommender systems make personalized suggestions and provide information of items available in the system. Nowadays, there is a vast amount of methods, including data mining techniques that can be employed for personalization in recommender systems. However, these methods are still quite vulnerable to some limitations and shortcomings related to recommender environment. In order to deal with some of them, in this work we implement a recommendation methodology in a recommender system for tourism, where classification based on association is applied. Classification based on association methods, also named associative classification methods, consist of an alternative data mining technique, which combines concepts from classification and association in order to allow association rules to be employed in a prediction context. The proposed methodology was evaluated in some case studies, where we could verify that it is able to shorten limitations presented in recommender systems and to enhance recommendation quality.
- Lightweight user modeling – a case studyPublication . Luz, Nuno; Anacleto, Ricardo; Martins, Constantino; Almeida, AnaIn the context of previous publications, we propose a new lightweight UM process, intended to work as a tourism recommender system in a commercial environment. The new process tackles issues like cold start, gray sheep and over specialization through a rich user model and the application of a gradual forgetting function to the collected user action history. Also, significant performance improvements were achieved regarding the previously proposed UM process.
- Personalized sightseeing tours support using mobile devicesPublication . Anacleto, Ricardo; Luz, Nuno; Figueiredo, LinoIn this paper, we present PSiS (Personalized Sightseeing Tours Recommendation System) Mobile. PSiS Mobile is our proposal to a mobile recommendation and planning support system, which is designed to provide effective support during the tourist visit with context-aware information and recommendations about places of interest (POI), exploiting tourist preferences and context.
- PSiS MobilePublication . Anacleto, Ricardo; Luz, Nuno; Figueiredo, LinoIn this paper, we present a state of the art on applications of mobile devices to support decision of a tourist running on a trip. We focus on two types of applications, tourism recommendation and tourism guide, making a brief description of the main characteristics of each one of them. We also refer the main problems encountered on the development of applications for mobile devices, and present PSiS (Personalized Sightseeing Tours Recommendation System) Mobile, our proposal to a mobile recommendation and planning support system, which is designed to provide an effective support during the tourist visit, providing contextaware information and recommendations about places of interest (POI) to visit, based on tourist preferences and his current context.
- Recommendation & mobile systems - a state of the art for tourismPublication . Luz, Nuno; Anacleto, Ricardo; Almeida, Ana; Figueiredo, LinoRecommendation systems have been growing in number over the last fifteen years. To evolve and adapt to the demands of the actual society, many paradigms emerged giving birth to even more paradigms and hybrid approaches. These approaches contain strengths and weaknesses that need to be evaluated according to the knowledge area in which the system is going to be implemented. Mobile devices have also been under an incredible growth rate in every business area, and there are already lots of mobile based systems to assist tourists. This explosive growth gave birth to different mobile applications, each having their own advantages and disadvantages. Since recommendation and mobile systems might as well be integrated, this work intends to present the current state of the art in tourism mobile and recommendation systems, as well as to state their advantages and disadvantages.
- Recommendation and planning through mobile devices in tourism contextPublication . Anacleto, Ricardo; Figueiredo, Lino; Luz, Nuno; Almeida, Ana; Novais, PauloIn this paper we present a mobile recommendation and planning system, named PSiS Mobile. It is designed to provide effective support during a tourist visit through context-aware information and recommendations about points of interest, exploiting tourist preferences and context. Designing a tool like this brings several challenges that must be addressed. We discuss how these challenges have been overcame, present the overall system architecture, since this mobile application extends the PSiS project website, and the mobile application architecture.
- Shopping center tracking and recommendation systemsPublication . Anacleto, Ricardo; Luz, Nuno; Almeida, Ana; Figueiredo, Lino; Novais, PauloShopping centers present a rich and heterogeneous environment, where IT systems can be implemented in order to support the needs of its actors. However, due to the environment complexity, several feasibility issues emerge when designing both the logical and physical architecture of such systems. Additionally, the system must be able to cope with the individual needs of each actor, and provide services that are easily adopted by them, taking into account several sociological and economical aspects. In this sense, we present an overview of current support systems for shopping center environments. From this overview, a high-level model of the domain (involving actors and services) is described along with challenges and possible features in the context of current Semantic Web, mobile device and sensor technologies.
