- Relações entre rentabilidade empresarial e exportações: o caso das empresas do comércio portuguêsPublication . Costa, Bruna Alexandra dos Santos; Silva, Armando Mendes Jorge Nogueira daIn the last few years, empirical studies have emerged that attempt at understanding the benefits generated by exports in firms. The present study aims to find evidence that Portuguese trading firms benefit from exports in terms of profitability, by checking the impact of the level of intra and extra-EU exports on the profitability of firms in the Portuguese market. The following research question was raised: What is the role of the level of internationalisation (measured by the ratio between exports and turnover) of Portuguese firms in the trade sector on their profitability? The methodology used was quantitative, using three models (depending on the variable of profitability measurement), based on data from 2010 to 2020 and for a sample composed of 3,569 Portuguese firms in the wholesale and retail trade sector. From the results obtained, there was a positive impact of the level of intra-EU exports on firms' profitability, through the OLS model. On the other hand, through the fixed effects model, there was a positive impact of the level of extra-EU exports on firms' profitability. We thus conclude that Portuguese firms in the sector under analysis that increase their level of internationalisation improve their profitability. For future research it would be interesting to take into account the role played by the different destinations and by the characteristics of the export markets for Portuguese firms, and also to understand the impact of the exchange rate on imports and exports that affects business margins at the price level.
