- Os desafios do work-life balance: estudo de caso numa unidade hoteleiraPublication . Barros, Ana Lúcia Belinha de; Silva, Ana Isabel Couto daThis dissertation, developed within the scope of the master's degree in Management - Business Management, aims to develop a study on the challenges of Work-Life Balance (WLB), in the sector of economic activity Accommodation, Catering and Similar, specifically in a hotel unit. In fact, this activity sector faces many challenges when it comes to reconciling work, family and personal life, particularly when we consider a specific organizational context: hotel units. In the hospitality industry, due to the intensity of work and the demanding work schedules for certain functions (based on shifts, for example), workers face added challenges when it comes to reconciling work with personal and/or family life. The main objectives of this research are: i) to identify the main challenges of work-life balance identified by the case study workers (hotel unit); ii) to identify the main differences in the representations of work-life balance, according to key variables of social differentiation of workers in this sector, namely gender, age, number of dependents, and functions in the organization. To explore this topic further, a case study was developed in a hotel unit, using a qualitative methodology that combined two main data collection techniques: a questionnaire survey to workers and semi-directive interviews to two different profiles of workers: workers without management functions and managers. The results showed that the main challenges of work-life balance are: working on dates that coincide with family events and holidays, working weekends, working shift work, the volume of work required, which often means working overtime, and the pressure they feel from management. These challenges are experienced more intensely by employees in management positions.
