- Development of a 3D computational heart model for virtual and augmented realityPublication . Almeida, Rita Marques; Belinha, Jorge Américo de Oliveira PintoThe work described in this dissertation is part of the field of technology applied to health, particularly cardiovascular diseases, and aims to develop a parameterized 3D model of the heart for virtual and augmented reality, using techniques such as the finite element method (FEM). This development can be used in the areas of education and/or training, by medical/nursing students, using virtual or augmented reality, as it allows them to virtually learn the various clinical tasks/surgical procedures, taking the pressure off the patient's injury/death and, in the future, minimizing the errors made during the procedure and leading to a better outcome for the patient and less associated costs. In addition, this tool can be implemented as an aid to the analysis of medical images currently used, such as computed tomography, so that the diagnosis can be more complete. This development focused on the study of the heart, since cardiovascular diseases, which include this organ, have high prevalence rates and are on the rise, which is a huge economic burden for the health systems of industrialized countries. A computerized tomography scan was used to build the model and, through the use of various tools, a 3D model was built that allows the different structures that make up the heart to be identified. In order to test its effectiveness, the model was run on a finite element tool and functional models were obtained.
