Abstract(s)
Among the various theories and documents that exist on business management, project management and operations, few focus on the Research and Development Centers (RDC). However, the resources available in the management area are adaptable to the RDC, taking into account the specific characteristics that distinguish them. Using the theories of Information Management (IM) of an organization, this dissertation has as its object of study the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Industrial Technology (CIETI), a research group from the Polytechnic of Porto - School of Engineering (ISEP). This study aims to analyse the management of information flow of CIETI and to identify all the inputs and outputs of its flow, considering the Information Systems (IS) that support this Research & Development (R&D) Unit. This way, a model for the management of information flow of CIETI is proposed, which meets the various premises of the Unit, corresponding to the evaluation and monitoring criteria of external entities and ISEP’s. In order to do this, data from CIETI processes will be collected and characterized and the stakeholders of each one will be identified. The methodology followed in this study was based on the Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate (CDIO) approach, which proved to be essential to design and implement new tools and documents to support the management of information flow of CIETI, as well as the operationalization of existing processes. The conception of this model allows, among other things, the definition of concrete moments to request contributions and information from the group, which stimulates the creation of organizational habits, which are particularly important for the management of the information flow of CIETI. CIETI’s information flow contributes to enhance the group’s performance, as it makes its work system more effective and efficient. It can also boost the motivation of its members, due to the useful way in which the information is structured, making the participation of each one more visible to the CIETI.
