Abstract(s)
Over the past few years, a significant part of industries has had to modify their ways of operating in the markets due to the substantial emergence of information technologies. The changes occur in terms of interacting with their customers, production processes or implementing strategies. The banking sector is not an exception and this study lies precisely in demonstrating how it has been adapting to digital transformations. The issue we aimed to investigate is to understand the different ways financial institutions in Portugal are adopting to remain competitive while implementing information technologies in their services. Thus, the main purpose is to research on the impact of information technologies in the banking sector and highlight their relationship with Fintech companies. In the present study, the results were obtained using qualitative methodology. A documentary analysis was conducted on reports and accounts published periodically by the five largest banks operating in Portugal, namely Banco Comercial Português, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Banco Português de Investimento, Banco Santander Totta, and Novobanco. The study was complemented by a semi-structured interview with the CEO of the Fintech company nBanks. In general, we concluded that implementing technologies in the banking sector has led to a positive evolution of most of the studied indicators and that Fintech companies and banks can collaborate and work together to develop the financial market in Portugal. This study contributes to predicting the future behaviors of banks and Fintech companies considering the data highlighted in recent years. This prediction enables us to understand that the relationship between banks and Fintech will be one of cooperation instead of competitiveness.
