Abstract(s)
The work describes the development of a pictograph code to assist the patients in the recognition of medicaments, thus avoiding the occurrence of misuses and inappropriate intake or dosage due to label confusion, wrong identification, packaging modification, generic drug substitution, etc. The code intends to be a technical solution to overcome the shortcomings associated to the constant substitution and replacement of medication, making it safer and less embarrassing for the target audience. The current pharmaceutical market is characterized by a myriad of active substances, each sold by dozens of different laboratories. This situation raised noteworthy problems associated to the identification of medications, due to the fact there are different packages for the same active substance and vice versa, which are further increased by the proliferation of generic drugs that provoke exchange of medicines, intake of inadequate doses, decreased medication adherence and persistence in acquiring medicines less advantageous in terms of cost and/or therapeutic effect. This difficulty in identifying drugs, being a global problem, has a major focus on the senior section of the population, in particular with chronic and polymedicated patients and patients with low literacy. The problem is exacerbated not only because older generations are less literate but also because the population is steadily aging. Moreover, it was also found that patients identify drugs according to the color and shape of the package and for the therapeutic effect of the medicines.
