Abstract(s)
This dissertation presents a study of the current context of Digital Transformation (DT) in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Northern Portugal. Initially, it provides an overview and relevance of the work conducted, offering a brief exposition and introduction to DT, Industry 4.0, and the role of transformation in the current landscape of this new industrial revolution. It also explains why DT emerges as a topic and its necessity. DT is a holistic and continuous transformation process in organizations, aimed not implementing digital tools but also at making fundamental changes in production, organizational, and cultural processes within the organizations that undertake it to ensure a nearly symbiotic relationship with technology. Through the conduct of semi-structured interviews and subsequent analysis, this study aims to fill a gap in the literature related to the study of DT in Portuguese industrial SMEs, including the proposal of a foundational DT strategy for these entities. This approach also seeks to establish an informative foundation for current and future use by industrial SMEs interested in this topic. It is concluded that there is an informational deficit in the scientific field, with a need for conceptual clarifications. Nonetheless, the results of digital tool integration and their consequent changes offer clear advantages to SMEs that implement them. Consequently, the results of this study raise new pertinent questions about DT in industrial SMEs.
